Hard to know with limited info in article.  But it looks like main reason guy is in trouble involves discharging a firearm in city limits without justification self defense and threat of bodily harm.
Had he done so out of city limits, likely no arrest.  Leaving it to FAA and private lawsuits.  Down the rabbit hole of drone's altitude and height of airspace over private property / home.

Even though intent of drone pilots were for a good cause, it is a kick of a hornet's nest.  Understanding, non drone owners see it as invasion of their privacy and trespassing.
