Still learning my Spark flying around the yard and house, but I've been reading about Kp index (geomagnetic fluctuation). Why is this important to me when flying my drone and what would be a good app to monitor Kp index.
I am also a beginner and I just bought the Phantom 3 refurbished. It was in a promotion deal. And I still don't know all the features. I really love to make videos and want to become a videographer. And this KP index thing. I will read about it too. And if you have any other thing I should know then type it down and let me know. I recently came to Canada through the Canadian immigrant investor program to take some good video shots, So any kind of help will be appreciated.
Basically a high KP index can impact on the performance of the drones compass though I wouldn't plan a flight around it - I've never crashed or lost any DJI drones in over three years of flying them and I've never checked out the KP index in my area.
Use the app UAV Forecast in the app store. It give s an explanation of the what KP is and its affect on GPS. "Geomagnetic storm index, 0-9, above 3 means disruption to GPS reception". Great app, gives you weather, winds aloft etc, with parameters able to be changed to user preference. For example, I have the wind set to 200 feet, as that is my RTH setting, and the height I do most of my flying at. Strongly recommend the app. FYI, I have never seen the KP index above three, and dont fly with winds aloft over 17 miles an hour.
Use the app UAV Forecast . i know it's tempting to just go and fly when the KP index reads not good to fly . use common scents if you don't have enugf sats or you have overcast skies it's just not worth it . when you lose GPS lock and if you are far out you and your drone are in trouble especially if you are out of LOS .
