Hi all,

I recently bought the Ronin-S to use with my Sony A7 III (https://www.sony.com.au/electronics/interchangeable-lens-cameras/ilce-7m3) with my Sony FE 24-70mm f2.8 (https://www.sony.com.au/electronics/camera-lenses/sel2470gm). Per the official compatibility list (https://dl.djicdn.com/downloads/Ronin-S/20190314/Ronin_S_Camera_Compatibility_List_en.pdf) that combination of camera and lens is supported by the Ronin-S. In addition, the camera weighs at 650g when the battery and SD-card are in while the lens weighs 886g for a grand-total of 1536g. I also bought and am using the MCC-Multi cable (https://store.dji.com/product/ronin-s-camera-control-cable-multi) but I'm not sure what its weight is. All in all this combination is still well under the 3.6kg the Ronin-S should be able to cope with.

I use the above setup with the riser and mounting plate and lens-support as the lens' focal-length ring gets 'stuck' to the mounting plate if I don't use the riser (as in I can't turn it).

Having gone over both the manual and about 2 dozen videos on balancing I'm pretty confident I balance it correctly. The balance test out of the Ronin app declares the balancing excellent across all three factors. After each balancing I perform the auto-tune to ensure the setup is as balanced as can be.

However, I'm facing two issues:
- While holding the Ronin in its upright position and move my arm left or right past a 45deg angle the roll motor 'gives out' and the whole setup 'falls'. When moving my arm left too much the whole setup may actually turn upside down at times. A video showing said behaviour can be seen under https://youtu.be/ZMW_h-uFB70
- When configuring the Ronin for infinite-roll (following the instructions under videos like https://youtu.be/hVnVAWPhhWA?t=66 and https://youtu.be/b3meiAcXW-0?t=370) the motor fails to spin the camera and gives up halfway. A video showing said behaviour can be seen under https://youtu.be/NAMGhXBe2L0

Given that I'm perplexed by this behaviour I've also uploaded photos of the balance settings in case something is obviously off about my setup or balancing. They can be found under https://photos.app.goo.gl/zBFhCW9V6aebJN4n9
I've also tried the above without the camera riser despite it 'blocking' my focal length ring but the result was exactly the same on both issues.

Is there something fundamentally wrong with my setup? Am I misreading the compatibility list? Is it possible that my Ronin is damaged and can't cope with the weight?
Any suggestions/info are appreciated.

Thanks!
Adam

Seems like you may have a bad unit.  I use the A7Sii and A9 with that lens with no problems from my Ronin S.  Out of curiosity are you balancing the lens at the same focal length you are shooting at?  A problem with the 24-70GM and 16-35GM that i've found is that because the lens extends or retracts based on focal length it's only truly balanced at one setting.

Thanks a lot @TravisSRT! I'm really glad to hear that cause I was really confused as to the behaviour. And no I don't mess with the focal-length after balancing cause I assumed the extension of the lens would throw the balancing off. I watched some videos that were saying the Ronin was able to deal with changing focal-lengths on zoom-lenses but given the issues I was facing I didn't want to push it.

Using the same combination, Sony A7III, 24-70/2.8 for several months now without ANY problems. Return your Ronin for a new one.

Thanks for the info Chris! I've already contacted the retailer and I'll be asking for a replacement

Definitely, agree, it seems like something is wrong with your unit. Shouldn't be a weight limit. Hopefully, once you get a replacement it solves the issues.

Thanks a lot Matthew, I'll be taking it to the retailer today. Hopefully they won't blame me and try to weasel out of the replacement

Thanks,

Are you guys having any problems with switching to underslung mode with an a7 and 24-70gm ? Specifically, the eye piece hitting the ronin and preventing it from rotating fully.
