A picture taken on 23-01-2019 nearby the town Veessen, where you see (left) the most recent waterwork in the Netherlands.
As a defensive measure against rising waters in our many rivers (in this case it is the river IJssel you see on the right).



There is a road that runs along this bridge and when the water level is too high for the dikes, they can raise the 'dam' underneath to flood a piece of land that is 2-5 km wide and that should lower the water level enough to keep us safe....

And one taken in the other direction (looking towards the town where I live)

Beautiful images, and love the info you supply. It looks as if this could freeze the devils ears off...........we are NOT used to snow, and extreme cold in South Africa. Winter at the moment, and I still run around with shorts and slops.......

Yes I can imagine.
Neither are we btw. We usually only get 2 or 3 times snow per winter.
