Sparkled by a group of young people’s passion for photography, PGYTECH  initiated its march to be a global expert on drone accessories and photographic devices in 2015. We have been making full efforts to offer the best solutions to extend the drone’s possibilities and keeping abreast of the ever-changing photographic needs since the day we decided to share our ideas with all the best-shot chasers. In the past four years, our efforts to engage more people to experience more has won so many friends’ recognition, and we would like to thank you all and turn your appreciation into our motivation to move on. As a professional provider of drone accessories and photographic devices, we believe it is part of our job to give practical advice when it comes to choose a suitable drone accessory or photographic device. Today, we shall start from the filter, which always difficult for people to make a decision.

In the first place, you have to know what is filter and why you need filter even when we have some very fancy cameras nowadays. A filter is a camera accessory consisting of an optical filter that can be used to modify the images recorded. Excellent photographic work always requires a balance of light entering the lens, which is particularly crucial for outdoor or landscape photography, considering the sunlight is out of human's control. In this case, a high-quality filter seems to be very necessary.

Regardless of the different varieties of filter, we mainly talk about four major categories that widely sold in the market: UV filter, ND filter, CPL filter, and ND-PL filter.

UV Filter(Ultraviolet Filter) is made to reduce the level of ultraviolet light exposure during photography sessions. When shooting at mountain areas or a long-distance shooting is required, the adaptation of UV filter can effectively lower the possibility of making bluish shot due to the insufficient exposure of yellowish red light but too much blue and ultraviolet caused by the high color temperature.

ND filter (Neutral-density Filter) reduces the amount of light entering so that the camera can choose the correct exposure value and prevents overexposure. With the adoption of a coating process, it avoids the problem of color deviation. By reflecting the scattered light, the ND filter can improve the color saturation to enhance the expressiveness of the picture. If you're a landscape photographer who wants to shoot long exposure sunsets, sunrises, waterfalls, and moving water, ND filter is without question the best performing and the most versatile filter. Applying an appropriate neutral-density filter is the equivalent of allowing the slower shutter speed and the desired motion-blur effect.

CPL Filter(Circular Polarizing Filter)  can effectively eliminate polarized light, increase color density, deepen the sky's blue, highlight white clouds, make the picture more transparent, and improve the clarity and expressiveness of the picture.  It is also made to darken skies, manage reflections, or suppress glare from the surface of lakes or the sea.

ND-PL Filter is an integration of the ND filter and Polarizing, which reduces the amount of entering so that the camera can choose the correct exposure value while eliminating the unwanted polarized light.

After years of research and repeated tests along with so many suggestive feedbacks from our cooperative professional photographers, we have developed a series of actual-usage-based filters that offer different options to people in different needs, which is also what have been pursuing since the establishment.

Hello there, one quick question. I’ve noticed your filters aren’t screwing in place of the original one but instead are pushed over. Besides the convenience of not having to unscrew the DJI lens cover, are those filters able to be used underwater or the seal isn’t waterproof enough?
The other possible issue is that as the diameter of the lens is increasing, would this fit in the typical underwater case?

Hi EI Diabolico,
General filters are not recommended for underwater photography. Snorkel filters are especially designed for this particular scenario.
The PGYTECH filter with replacement-free attachment  has several advantages:
1. There is no need to remove the original. Rather, directly attach the PGYTECH filter to ensure its water-resistant and anti-dust capacities, as the original could be damaged during replacement (e.g., unscrewing the original filter may impair the camera’s function during extreme weather).
2. The fast-attachment design, one-step attachment, and detachment together create a convenient and fast user experience. The PGYTECH filter can greatly reduce the trouble caused by the repeated replacement of filters for different shooting requirements.

You’ve right if you are referring to diving. In my case, I use an underwater housing even if the Osmo Action is waterproof as I don’t want any possible salt water leakage. Thank you.
