Wondering if there is an option to charge the remote from the data/USB port at the center of the remote. Anyone have any luck with this?

No,  the voltage isn't right,  USB is 5v and the battery needs 17.2 to charge.

USB is for data retrieval only

USB is for data retrieval only

You can also use the large usb for charging your phone whilst it is being used with the controller, the smaller connection on the left of the controller needs to be unplugged
