Marialva was one of the places that most struck me on a last summer trip through the interior of Portugal: a small, almost uninhabited medieval village, lost in time. It is part of the group of the 12 Historical Villages of the country that have in common the presence of 12th century castles, with defensive function, belonging to the Templar Order, which are near the border with Spain. Existing since Roman times, when it was still called Civitas Aravorum, Marialva became “Portuguese” in 1179, when Dom Afonso Henriques (first king of Portugal) had it repopulated, since it was a foundational village, and that, being very close to the border, it had a strategic situation for territorial protection.
