I’m unable to exceed a max speed of about 31 MPH,   It’s ok except when I’d like to return quickly or track a jet ski. Am I doing something wrong or is there some other possible speed limiter?

You didn't say which drone you're flying,  but have you switched to Sports mode?  That disables OA and increases speed.

Yes sorry. Dji magic pro Zoom with smart controller.  Yes, I flipped the slider switch on the controller to sport mode.  Max speed about 30 MPH
