Do you think a battery lock/clip is needed when flying spark over a lake to be safe? I have heard stories of batteries falling out mid-flight...

Yes, we have all heard those stories and they are real. That's the reason quite a few people use the battery strap. DJI did introduce a new battery design with longer clips to resolve this problem but the old batteries are still in the market and people like to have that extra protection with the clip.

The most common design of the battery clip you will find is this.




The same purpose can also be served by using an O-ring as shown below.



The advantage of using an O-ring over the clip is that you don't have to remove it completely to change batteries.

Sure why not? You only have to make sure that it is strong enough to not break.

Unfortunately, the new battery mount is just as bad as the old one.
I fell from a height of 90m with a new battery (survived, not hurt because it fell on grass).
Always use a battery strap as any battery may loosen due to vibration!

absolutely, considering it costs pennies compared to what could happen especially over water!!!!

I started to fly these clips when I encountered "pregnant batteries".
I think, this way they can get released, if older and full power is needed for a longer time period!With the clip, they just stay in place

Should you HAVE to use one? Absolutely not.

Is it a good idea to use one? Absolutely.

It costs next to nothing and protects your investment.
