I just received my drone and have it set up and calibrated for a trial flight but no AA battaries came with it and there does not seem to be a compartment on the back of the controller for them like they show in the tutorials.   Guessing its user error but any helpful info appreciated.

You got the upgraded transmitter.  It has a lipo battery inside that needs charging with the charging cord that plugs into the computer.  It has a small round dial on the upper left by the switch.  You will also have the upgraded motors and upgraded props.

You have got a upgrade version of the transmitter which comes with a gimbal dial on the top left corner.

Congrats, I know many are still getting the original Phantom 2.
I got the same one as yours today and noticed 2 things when compared with the original P2. It is quieter, and has a lot more torque so to speak.
