FIFO is big in Oz.  I believe at times of labour shortages,  people had been flying in and out of NZ to work in the NW of WA !
I personally think we were better off when there were "Company Towns" and folk lived in a mining area with their families.  It worked in WA until the big companies found it cheaper to start flying staff in and out.

Most of My Father’s family were all coal miners. Except him.

They all died from black lung, except him, an aneurism.

So I can relate to company towns, as for them it was Canmore Alberta.

Interesting,  I see that NW of  Canmore there's a place called Anthracite.    Now I remember as a young fella,  my Dad used to buy Anthracite for the fires at home ....  some sort of coal or coal derivative ???

AAA were rife in our family line also,  both Mum & Dad seccumbed - I have had mine repaired.
