Is the GoPro Hero 8 Black a bit like the King’s New Clothes?

Look like gopro invented the wheel yet again, cuz looking at gopro cameras you only feel you get some bang for the buck if you compare 2 non consecutive cameras.

GP7 to GP8 best update is the higher bitrate, the rest are,,,,,meh

had fun then all that mattered.

Interestingly very close overall.

I think GP8 often had more detail and often looked the nicer image - especially with the sky.  This was not the case with skin tones though, it came across as over sharpened - almost like that 'colorise' effect. GP had more colour but didn't look as natural as the OA

OA seemed slightly over exposed and GP8 slightly underexposed.  

DH - do you think you could recover colour from the sky on the OA in edit ?

I picked B, better colour tones and image stabilisation I thought.

In previous comparisons I’ve seen, with GP7, I’ve preferred the OA, so nice work GoPro.

Yes, that’s generally what I’ve noticed. Although I personally prefer the Action as I can’t live with some of the skin tones that I’m seeing from the GP8.

Some of what looks blown out is actually OK, there is still some dynamic range in there. That said, for this type of casual stuff I’d never want to be messing about in post as I don’t want to to be spending time correcting stuff that shouldn’t have been an issue in the first place.

I preferred 'B'.  If that was 'straight out of the box' on automatic setting that look nice to me at least.  I don't have an Osmo Action, but I do have a GoPro 6 and and Osmo Pocket.  Both are really great.  One may record more favorable footage, depending on the environment and lighting.
