I really don't get that statement.
It is the right drone for most people.
Not most photographers.
Too many limitations.

I've not seen any bad footage from it in the many youtube review outs there so far.  And most photographers are necessarily pro's.

These reviewers are pro's and know how to work with their equipment.
So it is logical they produce good footage.

Define photographer.
Since the era of the smartphone everybody is a photographer?
That is not my definition.
I consider myself a photographer (amateur).
But that is debatable

For me the limitations of the mini might be too many.
And I really don't like that, because it is my perfect drone in many ways.

I will wait for the implementation of the new EU laws. Mainly to find out if <250gr is really important or that this does not mean a lot here in NL.
Especially the rule regarding flying over buildings.
I would love to fly in certain places that I'm not allowed to right now.
So when that is clear, I will re consider my options

Coming from a Mavic Pro I think the mini would disappoint you.

Actually there are several really big plusses for me.
1. Better gimbal design.
2. Equal battery performance (even a tad better)
3. Probably better 50fps in FHD (the MP is not too good in that respect)
4. Much much lighter.
5. Much smaller.
6. Much cheaper.

So, it 'could' be a replacement.
But the lack of AEB and manual video mode, plus less stable connection, lack of physical controls for exposure are some drawbacks.
Not all are equally important for me, but AEB mode I use a lot.

PetaPixel reposts blogs and articles from elsewhere and not its own.
This article in question has been demolished by people that DO know photography.  Its complete junk written by someone who was at the sales demo so potentially sponsored.

It doesnt shoot RAW - that immediately makes it terrible for photographers.
No control of sharpness, ISO, white balance. (see above)
Same small sensor as previously so same awful dynamic range, low light performance etc
Video is a crazily compressed h.264 at 40Mbps (worse than mavic 1 and mavic air...).
No 4k (ok this isnt overly important).
For people who like gimmicks, lack of 360, AEB and so on as well.

If you take a 3-4 year old cellphone camera, stick some props on it, you have the mavic mini.
Its not something anyone remotely interested in photography is going to go for because the limitations make it near impossible to get acceptable results.

Except that the footage weve seen so far looks fine for the normal consumer.

You mean the selective, highly polished stuff taken in perfect conditions to show off the hardware?  Where detail comparisons are impossible due to the compression?

We know the hardware limitations, we know the software limitations.  Its fairly easy to deduce what is and isnt possible for it to do.
Glossy, cherry picked, optimum condition and edited showreels prove nothing at all.

Petapixel is kind of a joke in the photography community by the way... it is the site you go to when you have already checked every other site on the net but you are so hipped about some new gear that you will read anything...
IMO, DJI wanted to protect the Mavic Air sales by crippling this little drone. The Osmo Pocket does 4K and so could the Mini without any issues with the weight. With a decent 4K output, this could be the drone to travel with when the photography bag is too full to carry a Mavic 2 Pro or similar. I believe they lost a huge opportunity here.

I said in in another post. i would rather have 10mn less flight time for front obsticle avoidance and better image quality. A few YouTube channels are already crashing their drones because of the lack of it. Of course, this way we can have a Mini Pro version in a couple of months...

Perhaps that's the slot the next Mavic Air will fill.

Could be, after all the size difference isn't too big... on the other hand, if you have a Mavic Mini Pro, perhaps there's no need for a Mavic Air at all.
