This is correct, you have to start the motors.
For what i think the props can stay on, just starting low speed (not take off) is good. (I think, not sure)

The distance to the airport is irrelevant,  if you were flying a light aircraft you would be avoiding the control zones around the airports and flying through free space,  as a light aircraft at 5000ft you can choose your route.  If you fly near a control zone then you need to get permissions.  So a drone at 5000ft could easily collide with something.  This is why planes typically are supposed to be above 500 ft and drones 400ft or below.  This gives 100ft of seperation.

Um, trying to wrap my brain around how someone would fake their distance covered?  Like driving around in a car with it?
I cannot get any of my drones to land in my neighbor's driveway about 1,000 feet away from my house because it loses signal at about 30 feet and returns to home.

30 feet, that’s not far and not normal i think.

Well, I haven't tried it again with the M2Z because I just figured the houses and trees were getting in the way at around 25' to 30' high at 1,000' away.

So, I guess it would work if you lived somewhere without trees but it would be pretty obvious on the flight data side....like, I follow streets to know my way around when up there but this guy really sticks to them. Also would be funny if the props were left on and it lost connection.  Headline, Drone Attacks Vehicle.
Seems an elaborate way to pad flight distance, I'd rather just fly because that is what I got the drones for to begin with.  
Heck, if you're that lazy, do some waypoint flights.

I agree,  but some people like the unobtainable flight distances shown in the forum.

Over here with CE i am happy if i can fly about 1,500 feet. (in open place)
