I know the mini comes with different cables, but my question is does the mini require OTG???  I have over a thousand flights on my Spark and never used an OTG cable...many people in that community swear by it but I never had any connections issues with my iPhone so I never used OTG.

AFAIK you need the cable for the connection between remote control and your phone, I haven't heard of any other connection method.
Whether this wired connection has to be OTG or just "standard" is way beyond my knowledge and depends on the mobile phone OS...

As of now, OTG seems the (only) way to go.

The cable is the same as cable that connects Mavic Air, it is something you want and need .
