Only slightly off topic - and a bit beyond my patience - BUT -
If you want to get your feet wet with the Robotics Operating System ROS, which is the core software stack for the actual open-source Robomaster competition class robots, there are finally some workable instructions and code availble to try on some cheap hardware.
A fully blown Jetbot is around $150 and happens to include a Kepler-class GPU capable of running the ResNet-18 Deep Learning Model so you can dabble with AI features like Facial Recognition, Edge of Table Detection, etc. all under ROS.
And apparently there is already a simulator to test your programs in VR, so in theory a Jetbot isn't even required (but where would be the fun?).
