Over 50's generally have more spare time and money - and possibly limitations on more "active" pastimes. I'm actually surprised the stats aren't more skewed toward older pilots.
I'm in the 50-60 range. I've been a hobby photographer for over 35 years, using cameras for landscape, wildlife and for capturing fun activities like scuba diving and motorcycling. Started out in the 80's with an old Praktika and a box of slave strobes, doing cave photography.
A drone has seemed like a fun idea for many years but I really got serious when I started thinking of it as a flying tripod. I took a motorcycle trip to Alaska in 2018 and thought it would be cool to photograph or video myself without having to set up a tripod, ride back the way I came, ride past the camera, then ride back to collect it. Not to mention the possibility of otherwise unobtainable vantage points and even "follow-me" footage (before I knew how challenging that actually is.) I ordered a drone before the trip which went missing in shipment - So much for that idea!
Fast forward two years and with another bike trip coming up, I tried again. The Mavic Mini has proven to be a lot of fun and the fly-more combo is the perfect size to fit in a top box, still leaving plenty of space for the tire repair kit, spare gloves, hat, snacks, water bottles, first-aid kit, etc. I started out doing mostly video but now seem to be doing mostly stills. Playing about with a lot of panoramas and multi-exposures. It's a steep learning curve but I am gradually working out how to fulfill a lot of ideas for landscapes, seascapes and motorcycle action stuff. My brother is a steam railway buff and I can imagine getting some spectacular shots of trains on bridges and such-like which would be unobtainable by any other means. There's a beautiful world out there, just waiting to be photographed ;)
