Hey,
I'm a fresh dji tello owner, too who faced the same problem as you. I spent days looking for the solution which I couldn't find (until now). As you mentioned their support (they're really polite and seem helpful) is rather useless. I contacted the support team, the dev team and none of them could help me. They kept telling me to calibrate the drone and update the firmware and they also suggested me to buy a special carpet that is full of patterns so the drone can fly flawlessly over it.
I don't know exactly what's the cause of the problem as I don't know the exact mechanism and behavior of the drone but it definitely has a VPS (visual positioning system) that during the flight keep looking for patterns that can help positioning the drone. So if the ground you're flying your drone over has no patterns that the drone could stick to or it simply just can't see because of the low amount of light and it won't execute most of the commands you can find in the SDK (that's the reason why it's starts "randomly moving" without any command because it keeps looking for patterns).
SOLUTION: use the "rc a b c d" command. "RC" basically stands for "Remote Control" and the corresponding parameters mean the positions of the two sticks on a remote control. You can find the description of the command in the SDK.
This command is going to be executed no matter what. I reckon this is the one the phone app's are based on, too.
I hope it helps, and I'm really sorry that the support is not able to answer this simply question and they let their customers find the solution out by their own. I'm sure many people have already contacted them with the very same issue.
Have a nice day!
