I guest I'll have to register now...  I like getting the gimble out of harm's easy way.

Wouldn't the majority of people have bought the Mavic Mini because it is 249g?

Can the Mini still fold with the extension legs on ?

Probably easier to use a small launch pad which can be folded up.
It would still give adequate gimbal clearance on start up.

cost was my tipping point.  I figured that accessories would top 249.

what does it matter, you should be registered as a hobby recreational pilot regardless unless you are a "sovereign citizen."  you still have to follow the same rules, there really wasn't a serious advantage to being unregistered.  I say there is exactly zero detriment to adding extensions to your mm.  expect maybe $5.

You don't have to be registered for this drone, just follow the flying rules. Regardless, lots of people outside the US fly these and I checked Croatia for when I go on vacation and if it's over 249g you can't fly at night or in populated areas.

yep this drone is good for outside the country (usa) where there are advantages unlike the no advantages you find here.

Buy a battery for the Japanese version of the drone and the total weight will be less than 249 grams!

So how would registering a 249g toy make me any different?

Yes and No. My main reason is that it's the smallest Mavic available and I want to carry as little as possible when I travel. I registered mine on day 1 anyways knowing that any kind of accessories I put on it will put it over 249. The 249 is only useful when I travel internationally and don't have time to go through the registration process of certain countries.

In practice I never use them.
There is usually a place to land (your hand)
Plus I would not want to change the drone too much.

I agree, a landing pad has so many advantages, one being clearance too.

I am a cyclist and often carry a DSLR in my kit (with action cams).  The Mini is meant to offer more photo options (carried in a jersey pocket).  As such, the drone must deploy and recover rapidly from varied locations.  This seemed easier than carrying the pad.  Time & experience with tell.

At under 250g, you can fly in some countries around the world without having to register. I was able to fly in Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, and Japan (after borrowing a Japanese Mini battery) without having to register the aircraft.

And where do I get such a battery? How affects it your total flight-time? i mean, how many minutes are you losing with the Japanese version?

You can find DJI products at Yodobashi Camera and probably Bic Camera which are the 2 most popular electronics store in Japan and they have branches all over japan (multiple in the bigger cities). They were all out of stock on batteries while I was there due to the initial rush though. Luckily, my cousin live in Japan and he already bought a Mini Fly more combo so I just borrowed one of his battery. Flight time will drop to about 18 minutes. Worst case, long as you have one Japanese battery, you can bend the rules a bit by using the regular battery at times as most people will assume you're flying a Japanese version at 199g.

Most of those things are just well marketed.
But that is an opinion
