I remember my first flight with the Mavic Mini like it was yesterday. The flight was not as I had planned but somehow grew into a learning experience for me. I will share what happened that day only if you don't laugh. Well, ok, you can laugh if you want.
I had just received the Mini a few days earlier. My brother-in-law asked when I was going to fly my new drone and waited anxiously for the epic unboxing. We dove into the experience marveling at the contents in the box. I was nervous but excited at the same time. We charged the batteries, attached my phone to the controller, and waited. Weather conditions were favorable, nothing too extreme for the first flight. We went outside onto my back deck and fired her up.
She took to flight like a dream. First up, then yawed side to side, then down. This was so cool. I was piloting my first drone ever. I decided to take it to the back of my lot, having my brother-in-law as my spotter. We have trees in the back and you know where this is going, right? I was watching the screen; he was watching the drone... so I thought. He suddenly said, "Where did it go?" I said, "It's by the trees. How close is it?" Well, we both found out quickly. What ensued after was panic and quick joystick movements (not really knowing what I was doing, but trying to channel Maverick and Top Gun).
I attached a video from #myfirst flight that day. It is unlike any dream-like footage I have seen on YouTube. No cinematic turns, flawless descents, high-speed FPV’s. It is pure flight, with a remarkable ending I hope you enjoy. Go ahead, laugh at me. I know I did... after we went back inside and shared the experience of my first flight.
