Normally I only use the Apple branded cables. However for my iPad Mini 3 I purchased an Apple certified orange cable so that it would be easier to spot while I was packing up. Same for the case for the iPad. It's a lot harder to miss the orange color on the ground.

I have found that Apple Licensed MFI Certified cables are just as reliable as Apple cables, and offer more options.  I bought the 1 ft Apple Certified Ultra at TigerDirect.  It arrived yesterday and worked flawlessly today for a 2.5 km flight over water.  Looks like Walmart has them too . . . http://www.walmart.com/ip/Ultra-ULTRA-Charge-and-Sync-Cable-Lightning-To-USB-Lightning-Connector-1-Foot-White-U12-43901/42584730

Below are two cables that work well since they are only 1' long. Neither are Apple cables, but they are both Apple MFi certified.

I simply cut an original one to the length I needed and re-soldered it. Works perfectly.

Im using a 1' Apple certified cable from amazon. aluminium ends and braided cable, nicely made. i just leave it attached to my TX. Made by Cambond, comes in colors too.
