Yesterday afternoon I was flying my Mavic Pro around 4000 feet away from the home point. At 50% battery, I decided to come back when all communications went dark. The app asked me to return home to which I did, however, it never came back. I have my return to home altitude set very high due to the tall trees. I believe the drone lost all power instantly and dropped to the dense forest below. I heavily searched the area given on the find my drone feature, but no luck.

Post your log here, and that may help in understanding what happened, and possibly find your drone.
But at first blush, you stated you started coming back home @50 percent battery capacity.
Really cutting it close as long as there is no "upwind fight".
If there were winds, and you took of going downwind, and started back @ 50 percent, you were doomed
from the get go. It is possible that the Mavic just ran out of battery fighting the headwind, and fell to earth.
With the logs, we can figure out the most likely location for a search to recover it.
