What is a Yagi Uda antenna? It's a kind of high gain directional antenna that uses parasitic elements, and reradiate the radio waves from the driven element with a different phase, achieving a very substantial increase in the antenna's gain compared to a simple dipole. (refer to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yagi–Uda_antenna for the complete article).

For what I can see they're all 5.8 GHz versions, there's no choice about that, but 5.8 might be the most useful, and I'd expect the gain to scale approximately according to the claimed projection, or so... what do you think ?

I am thinking of going for it...

A distance test and the 3d files can be found below.  Interesting to note that you need to different designs, one for 2.5ghz and one for 5.8ghz.

That's the best test I've seen with any sort of signal booster, all those parabolic tests never showed a difference like that before.

Where can we get the rods? I have a printer I could make this on, but I don't know about the antenna rod part.

I would have thought the hardware store would have them and then its just a case of cutting to the right length.

On aliexpress you can find yagi antennae only for 5.8 GHz, since the Minis that are sold there are FCC models. On ebay there are offers for both 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz. I ordered 5.8 from aliexpress and 2.4+5.8 (two pairs) from ebay. True, I will have two pairs of 5.8 but at least i could compare

i noticed after he put the boosters on he immediately started raising his altitude which would also help with interference?

I'm not sure it's the extenders that make it better, it is the increase in altitude. Nearly doubled the height. Whenever I flew over 1.5 km I always increase altitude. So far I could have up to 2.5km without problems. Can't see why I'd want to fly much further. It's a mini !!

you can use copper, brass, or aluminum. cut those thing to different scale for 2,4 and 5.8 i think.

Those cheap Parabolic extenders work also. Speaking from experience. I have them in my set for times when I lose signal. Once you put them on the video comes back and you can go out further no issues.

I am wondering if one could still fit the parabolics after the Yagi-Uda boosters, hehe

No, and there would be no point. To me the parabolic extenders are more focused. You aim where your drone is and you are good to go. Those Yagi-Uda ones seem less focused to me.

Actually for what I've seen on the interweb the re-radiation pattern of the parabolics (and I do remember having seen a diagram with arrows representing the waves) is quite broad, meanwhile the Y/U promise a narrower beam.

At just EUR 7,84 I think they are an undeniable bargain, and I could even pick the color.

One thing I wish is that we could see the signal strengths in -dBm the system is experiencing...

I have a feeling that somehow the reflectors manage to better convey the video feedback, but it might be possible that they don't get you any further. I've never done proper tests... I just noticed that my video was less stuttery with them on, and decided to keep using them.

Then I also think some thin sheet aluminum like that in the prabolics (let alone the home chicken-wrap foil) might work better with a 5.8 GHz wave.

There's more, for what I can see from a video coming from Japan (I've made a screenshot of it, don't have link to share atm), the 2.4 GHz emission has a shady area exactly around the 1400 to 1500 meters at about 80 m height... but since no angle of the antenna polarization was fixed we can't figure out if some shady area above or below the mid point has had an impact, this concerned the trasmission (RC to AC). Then there's feedback (AC to RC), that might have been quite reliably framed as the OP didn't move much, but again... shifting height or side to side could have had a good impact on video feeback signal strength.

It's slipping through my hands this whole argument but hope to have made a good point. I'll test my Y/U 5.8 antennas when they arrive (also... did you know that one antenna sits lower in the enclosure than the other? this might also have an impact as the extender, especially the Y/U is not aligned perfectly). I've also read reports of just one antenna being used in some cases...but don't remember any longer.

Does anyone has proper dimension of the Yagi Uda antenna for Mavic Mini? I know there are STL and OBJ files at Thingiverse. But I would like to add in some improvement on the Y/A and Inventor couldn't read OBJ and modify STL files.

Thanks in advance. Appreciate.

If you have an autodesk account I suggest Mesh EnablerIt will convert the imported stl's to a base model that you can work from, I use this a lot on modifying files on thingiverse.

I ended up ordering a set, to busy to muck with the printer right now.

I have a drawing which I believe to be correct for the 5.8 GHz... the distance of the rear element is 19.5 mm from the dipole and each front element is spaced 9.7mm apart.

There are online calculators where you can input the exact length of your frequency waves and they offer the best solution (numbers) to create the antenna.

I've used the Parabolic mirrors on my CE controller & Mini in a similar rural setting to the video above, in the UK-  South East of England.
I managed to get to 2290 meters (1.42 miles) on  2.4Ghz .. And the signal was still good.. I felt i could have pushed further, but i bottled it due to head winds and remaining power..

It's what I believe... parabolics seem to be more suited to the 2.4 GHz wave, Y/U to the 5.8 GHz wave (2.4 GHz versions not having the same proportional result).

I'd be more than happy to reach 1.4 Km in my local environment w/ Y/U as the 2.4 GHz frequency is too variable with close-by Wi-Fi home networks.

Still not a fair comparison test: the agl starts with 46m on the first, raises to 85m on the second and ends up at 100m on the third !
if you do the same same test without any parabolic or yagi, you'd probably get the same results, as the wifi propagation is far better as you climb !!
I bought a yagi one and will post a neutral and fair test: same track, same agl, trying to get same flight conditions, I looked for one and never found it..
