Yes, at least in the US, but be warry. I generally only do this when I am climbing the side of a mountain with the Mavic.

The legal limit for non-Part 107 recreational flying in the US is 400 feet (~120 meters) above ground level or a nearby structure. So if you take off from a valley and climb up to the top of a hill, you can fly another 400 feet above that. That does not mean that you can fly at that altitude in the middle of the valley though.

Exactly right.

You can actually apply (but give it a week or so) to go up to 500m.
I haven't tried, but I am aiming to get out over a cool part of my area with the CASA permit and snaps some tidy pictures.

Am i nervous? Absolutely.
If it works will it be great? Yep!

But yeah, stick to 120m if you don't want to cop fines. My understanding is fines and processing them is a huge pain for everyone involved, so unless an "incident" (injury, damage of property, cause an accident etc) actually occurs, they may not bother to pursue you - personally I'll play it safe. As it stands there's no fee with applying for the permit to fly higher, so the worst they can do is say "no".

As this is posted in Australia section. CASA states the 120m (400ft) is the maximum stated in the CASR Part 101.
