I speak a little German. I spell no German. So I use Google Translate to get the spelling when I want to write. My dad's mother, Granny, was German and spent a lot of time with me. Dad, fluent in both languages, was annoyed that she spoke German to me because at the time there was a theory that children should only speak one language. That's probably why few Americans know another language. Or perhaps just because other countries are so far away from most of America.
