Osmo Action - misleading FOV?

Hi,

I recently purchased a DJI Osmo Action camera to use in my MSc project. The main reason why I bought it was the FOV of 145 degrees and Dewarp modes, and I will be using it for live previewing (not recorded footage that can be edited in post-production). I have manually measured the FOV in a variety of settings and found the following:

Dewarp off/EIS off: 110 degrees
Dewarp on/EIS off: 99 degrees
Dewarp on/EIS on: 83 degrees

These measurements may not be absolutely perfect but it's quite clear that the advertised 145 degrees FoV is not quite correct. I've tried all of the different modes, aspect ratios, frame rates etc. but I can't get the FoV above 110 degrees (I can achieve ~115 degrees in 4:3 aspect ratio @4K but as the Dewarp option is disabled it is not suitable for my project).

Can someone please explain to me how to get the 145 degrees FoV advertised? (with Dewarp enabled)

Kind regards,
George

Bump, I really need that 145 degrees (or close)

Not sure what to tell you, man.

Do you mind breaking down how you're coming up with your numbers?

Thanks for the reply. Whilst live previewing I used a pen to mark the edges of the image at various distances, then connected the dots on either side and used a protractor to measure the angle between them. It's not perfect but it gives a good idea to within a couple of degrees.

Is there some sort of mode or setting that I'm missing? Or are you aware of some software that will 'unlock' the extra degrees? Or do you think it's a case of exaggerated advertising (i.e. they've used diagonal FoV in their specs)?

I never measured the the maximum FOV but whatever it is, there is no way you are getting as much with dewarp and/or rocksteady enabled. Both these functions crop into full sensor readout and FOV is not your only loss here. Since 4K video uses almost all the sensor horizontally, when you crop in, you are also loosing the true resolution (with those functions on, 4K recordings are actually around 2.7K only).

This is the same with all action cameras by the way, not just Osmo Action.

Thanks for the clarification, but even with RockSteady and Dewarp disabled the maximum FoV is still only around 110 degrees, not the 145 as advertised. I was therefore wondering if I'm missing something?

When I enable Dewarp only it seems to narrow the FoV by around 10 degrees, but 135 degrees would be much better than the 100 degrees I'm getting.

That unfortunately I cannot help you with. There was another thread at the early days about the FOV, but I could not find it Hope you get a solid answer from DJI...

Here's my guess. You're probably exactly right, it's misleading. They are probably referring to diagonal FOV as if it's horizontal FOV, banking on nobody will know the difference. Then they conveniently omit in-depth specs so that nobody can put 2 and 2 together.

We need a chart similar to this: https://community.gopro.com/t5/en/HERO9-Black-Digital-Lenses-FOV-Information/ta-p/712624?ds_rl=1274407&ds_rl=1274407&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIoLrvooCA7QIVSdyGCh2faQ5dEAAYASAAEgIaMPD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Yeah they did eventually get back to me and confirmed a diagonal FoV was used for marketing, which is annoying as I needed a 145 horizontal FoV for my project!

I was interested in this as well and did some measurements.
So for the DJI Osmo Action I can confirm the following horizontal FOV angles:
Rocksteady OFF+FishEyeCompensation OFF: 112,1deg
Rocksteady OFF+FishEyeCompensation ON: 98,5deg
Rocksteady ON+ FishEyeCompensation OFF: 95,5deg
Rocksteady ON+FishEyeCompensation ON: 87,2deg

Thanks, a far cry from the 145 degrees advertised!

I  find a way to actually swap the official lens then add a lens to get a wider angle,
