Hi there,
I have been an old DJI customer, having used the Spark earlier while the Ronin-S and Mavic Air are with me currently. I run a couple of YouTube channels with a combined subscriber base exceeding 1.5 million.
I bought the DJI Mavic Air Fly More Combo in December 2018 in the US. I rarely use it due to restrictions in drone operations in India, where I stay. On an average, I use the drone twice or thrice a month.
Last year, one of the batteries of the drone failed. Last week, the other two batteries also failed.
This has got me very worried -
1) how can all batteries of a drone fail?
2) I have used a ton of electronics over the years - smartphones, gimbals, action cameras, cameras, audio equipment, etc. Never has it happened that the battery has failed like this. Detoriated - yes, failed - NEVER.
3) The Mavic Air shows 100% battery before take-off, as soon as take-off happens, it all of a sudden starts showing 0% and does a free fall. This is shocking for 3 reasons -
a) how can the world leader of drones not program the drone to not turn on/take off if battery is weak?
b) if the battery is weak/low, how can it just do a free-fall?
c) who takes responsibility if something breaks or anyone gets hurt due to the free fall of the drone?
This brings me to a few questions -
1) I got in touch with DJI, they conveienently said that the drone is out of warranty, we can't do anything. This is purely using its monopolistic position to an advantage. You make the drones, you make the batteries, you are fully responsible for failure of multiple batteries (I can understand if one battery failed but all failing at once? Clearly that batch of batteries need to be recalled).
2) This seems like a software issue, if the battery is poor, then why is the drone turning on or taking off or even showing 100% charge in the first place (both at the time of take off and after taking off and hovering in the air)!
3) Why does DJI make such poor quality batteries? I am certainly not the first person facing this issue, a friend's Mavic Pro 2's battery stopped working all of a sudden and he had to get a new one for Rs. 11,000/- ($144). He sourced it from Dubai because DJI batteries in India cost an arm and leg, and availability is also poor. Our country is in a lockdown so I am stuck with a drone with no batteries. I had an urgent video to shoot for official purposes (of my city in lockdown).
I have lost complete faith in DJI, I always held them in high regard for their excellent products, mainly their drones but what use is an excellent drone with all batteries failing and the drone free-falling from height? I continue to swear by the Ronin though.
