The long drought and heat of the last years combined with the bark beetle destroyed large parts of spruce forests in the Harz region. When weakened by the weather and lack of water the trees are unable to fight the beetle. As shown in the video vast parts are brown and dead, others cut down, some of it from storms. To me it looks very sad.
On the other hand the spruce is not native to the lower parts of the hills - it was only planted by humans for a quick profit. So the forest industry literally got what it sowed. Now they start to grow more deciduous trees.
