With a mavic mini, which uses the fly app, I have been able to set the home point to some randomly chosen place on the map, it did appear to work but I did not complete the landing. I have only done it once and don't remember precisely what I did, sorry.
I have read that it also is possible to set the home point to either the indicated position of the controller or the indicated position of the drone via tapping the appropriate/their icon on the map. I believe the controller's position is determined form the phone's GPS but can not confirm that is correct but it would mean that the phone must have GPS enabled etc..
After the above setting the home point to a random place experiment I may have reset the home point to where I/the controller was by tapping the controller's icon but I can't remember for certian if I did, it was not important at the time.
The one thing I would say about using the map to set a homepoint is ZOOM IN, to the map, AS MUCH AS IS POSSIBLE. 'Zoomed out' to any great extent could give horrendous errors.
Also the map MUST have good resolution, when I first looked at the map in the app (wifi etc.disconnected) its resolution was HORRIFIC, truely HORRIFIC and would have been entirely useless for setting a home point, the implication being that you must have an internet connection or the maps of your flying location saved somehow.
I tried my experiment in a wide open field with changes in position of the home point being limited to maybe 40m |
