Ok, I’ve searched all over and cannot get a definitive answer to this.

Once I’ve got good GPS and take off, the kind lady tells me “the Home Point has been updated, please check it on the map”. From then on, if RTH is selected or kicks in due to an emergency, the MA2 will fly back to the recorded point.

My question is this:

On the Safety menu it gives the option to “Update Home Point”, but what does it use for this ? The RC location? A selected point on the map? The current location of the drone?

Does anyone know of an authoritative guide (video or text) on this function?

From the DJI Fly manual... "Use this setting to update your home point to your desired location. Your home point can be set as your aircraft’s takeoff position or the current GPS location of your mobile device and remote controller."

Ok, but I can’t find any reference to a DJI Fly manual in the DJI MA2 downloads. In fact I can't find one in the Mini downloads either! Where did you get it from?

Oops! However, I have already looked at that and, for something as important as this, it doesn’t really tell / show you much.

As is the case with most references DJI, I tried the option after doing a follow me test and got the option for where the drone was or where I/controller was. Just find somewhere safe to fly send the drone out then try the option.  Being able to a set a pin location would be good but alas not available (yet).

You should be able to move the home point on the map to wherever you want.

The reference in the Fly app manual/guide is...

Update Home Point
Use this setting to update your home point to your desired location. Your home point can be set as your aircraft’s takeoff position or the current GPS location of your mobile device and remote controller

If you can drag an AC icon anywhere on the map that would be potentially useful as would waypoints but not expecting those without funding an MP3.

If out in a boat on a small lake, you could launch and fly over to shore and establish a home point in case you lose signal or batteries get low.  Same out hiking...if you're in the rocks/boulders, you could fly up or over to a flat spot, record the home point and then go have fun in the rocks.  Vice versa, if you are hiking and launch, then hike while flying, you can at some point initiate a new home point to the remote's position.

Yup can't fault that logic and not going down the dynamic home point thread again.

Update Home Point

The fly app manual is terrible.

Try it yourself.  Go to adjust the home point, and move the map  around (the home point icon stays in the middle).  Once you have it where you want, hit ok, and now you have a new home point.  I guess you could use it as a waypoint, but you would have to do one at a time. Set new home point, hit RTH, cancel landing, set new home point then press RTH again, over and over.

Useful bit of information thanks for sharing I'd agree on the content being poor in some aspects but they can only improve with app update (hopefully).

With a mavic mini, which uses the fly app, I have been able to set the home point to some randomly chosen place on the map, it did appear to work but I did not complete the landing. I have only done it once and don't remember precisely what I did, sorry.
I have read that it also is possible to set the home point to either the indicated position of the controller or the indicated position of the drone via tapping the appropriate/their icon on the map. I believe the controller's position is determined form the phone's GPS but can not confirm that is correct but it would mean that the phone must have GPS enabled etc..
After the above setting the home point to a random place experiment I may have reset the home point to where I/the controller was by tapping the controller's icon but I can't remember for certian if I did, it was not important at the time.
The one thing I would say about using the map to set a homepoint  is ZOOM IN, to the map,  AS MUCH AS IS POSSIBLE. 'Zoomed out' to any great extent could give horrendous errors.

Also the map MUST have good resolution, when I first looked at the map in the app (wifi etc.disconnected) its resolution was HORRIFIC, truely HORRIFIC and would have been entirely useless for setting a home point, the implication being that you must have an internet connection or the maps of your flying location saved somehow.
I tried my experiment in a wide open field with changes in position of the home point being limited to maybe 40m

Do you have to be airborne for the map feature to work???

Hi,

If you open the Fly app menu for (re)setting the HP ;

If you do nothing on the screen and just press the the icons to right:
- arrow icon > HP is set to where the craft if flying (default setting, so need to select, ok is enough)
- rc icon > HP is set to where the RC (mobile device) is

If you move the map under the blue craft icon then HP is set to where that icon is on the map.

OK to activate choice

cheers

BaynhamPhoto,

As a matter of fact you can drag AC on a map and set a new HP in a place you dragged AC image to.
It works quite nicely.
