@ DJI Mods...  Is there any hope that we will get the choice for H.264 for the 60fps clips in the Fly App settings?   I really dislike HVEC and my hardware struggles with it, as I suspect some other folks' does too.  As storage is cheap, what is the rationale for forcing the more oppressive codec for 60fps?  I dont care about file size, and we are not dealing with 10 bit stuff, so .... why?

Who's with me on having this choice?

Thanks in advance for all comments.

+1 great idea - H265 is horrible.

Hi Northwood, 1080P/2.7K 60FPS supports H.264, please selecting Coding Format under Camera Settings by tapping three bars on the top right corner. 4K, 60FPS only support H.265 by default.

Thanks for your reply and yes, I am aware of how to select.  That is not the issue.  Why are we being forced to use H.265?  You can certainly record 4k video in other devices in H.264.  In fact, there should be no issue with 60fps in that mode also.

I am requesting this as a feature please.

Why would you not use the H.265? The compression is way better than the 264?

tshansen,

Yes - and for that reason H.265 processing requires a lot of processor and graphics card power.
It is a trade-off between clip size and ability to decode smoothly.
If you do not have top notch hardware your video will be jerky. Also, not all video editing programs support H.265 well.

DJI should give people option to choose H.264 versus H.265.

Unless i’m mistaken, there should also be some improvements on image quality (e.g. Less artefacts), not just smaller file size

They are interchangeable. Compared to H.264 you get better quality at the same bitrate or smaller size at same quality. It is heavy on the editing hardware though...

H.265 is a acquisition and delivery codec. It is not an editing codec, and even delivery will be a problem if you don't have modern playback hardware.

If quality matters at all to you, you will choose H.265 over H.264 to capture the most detailed image possible. Transcode to an intermediate codec for realtime performance while editing, and when you are done editing and prepare your output files, choose a less demanding codec with the understanding that you will lose detail or have to increase the bitrate.

Sure, we can proxy edit, but I would still prefer the choice.  Thanks all for your feedback.

I never go higher than 1080p that is fine for most people’s eyes all 4K does is introduce a world if problems and huge data size

Sorry for the late response, in comparison to AVC, HEVC offers from 25% to 50% better data compression at the same level of video quality, or substantially improved video quality at the same bit rate.
Your need will be forwarded to our engineers for attention, sorry for any inconvenience caused.
