I am really happy about the Osmo Action usability,
I need multiple cameras as I go diving, and one battery is not enough.
I also purchased the GoPro Hero 8 on sale.
I do prefer the Osmo Action interface and screen, especially in a dive housing.

Most of my content is output at 1080p, I am interested in 2.7k and 1080p (by the way does the battery at 2.7K lasts longer than when shooting at 4K? and 1080 vs 2.7K?)

I noticed the file size at 1080p 60 fps and 2.7K 60fps is huge.
I would be happy with a lower bitrate option to save drive and card space.

I put the same newly formatted 128 GB memory card and I checked the recording time on both the GPH8 and the DJI OA.

Any chance that DJI may provide more compressed/smaller files at 1080p and 2.7K 60 fps?
GoPro Hero 8 files at 4K 60fps are smaller than Osmo Action at 1080p 60fps.
Osmo Action at 2.7K 60fps does make sense, 167 min, same as 4K.

That would be amazing.

GoPro Hero 8 128 GB 1080p
30fps 7h 36 m 456 min
60 fps 5h 04 m  304min
DJI Osmo Action 128 GB card 1080p
30 fps  7h 59 min 479 min
60fps  3h 29 min 209 min

GoPro Hero 8 128 GB 2.7K
30fps 5h13m 313min
60fps 5h 13m 313 min
DJI Osmo Action 128 GB card 2.7K
30fps 3h29m 209 min
60fps 2h47m 167min

GoPro Hero 8 128 GB 4K
30fps 5h 13 min 313 min
60fps 4h 09m 249 min
DJI Osmo Action 128 GB card 4K
30fps  2h47m 167 min
60 fps 2h47m 167 min

Apart from 3 modes (1080p at 30, 25 and 24 fps) which use 36Mbps video bitrate, Osmo action utilizes either 100Mbps or 82Mbps. These high bitrates are a blessing especially for high resolution and/or frame rate modes, but can be a bit of an overkill for some lower ones. I guess they could have put some more effort into choosing those...

Thank you! yes, I would like an option to use lower bitrates at least at 1080 60, and possibly at 2.7k 60 fps.
GoPro has h.265 compression,  still, I would like to have an option to conserve card space if I need to. With dives, I need 60fps as I do breath-holding and fish move fast, so I need often to slow down 80-50%,
Would it be difficult to give consumers a choice? maybe be able to have higher/lower bitrate settings, just 2 options.

Does the bitrate affect how long the battery charge lasts? or the resolution only?

H.265 can maintain the same image quality to h.264 at much lower bitrates. Unfortunately Omo Action does not have that capability. Giving the users lower bitrates for h.264 as an option would not hurt though. I think some resolution /  frame rate combinations would make much more sense that way...

Thank you, even if h.265 is not possible. having a LOWER BITRATE option, like in the GoPro, would be helpful. The Osmo Action has a high bitrate, but it produces very large file sizes at 2.7k and 1080p 60fps.
Allowing the user to have a couple of bitrate options would give some flexibility.

They can be difficult to play back on ‘lesser’ computers as well because of that bit rate. Which got me thinking about  filming bit rate and product bit rate. If I have to deliver at say 20mbs, would it be just the same  to film in 20mbs or film at say, 100 and crunch down to 20?

I’m guessing it’s better to film high .....

Before someone fires the stock answer, I have a little emergency bit rate story....

I filmed at 50mbs on a Sony camera. Edited and rendered at 20 for customers. The film went out and weeks later, I saw a glitch on the stream. It was consistent.

So I returned to the original and would you guess ..... files missing, or more likely, mislaid or moved somewhere else from the original place, so the editor couldn’t find them and I couldn’t be bothered!

So I went to the 20mbs version, edited and rendered again at 20. I can’t see any difference if I’m honest on a 55 inch tv.

So it does make you wonder whether going hyper on bit rates is that necessary for most people given that some may well have slower computers that struggle with such high bitrates. Great for sales I guess, when you advertise a 100mbs camera but in reality, lens, stabilisation, and  colour rendition are much more noticeable.

Maybe a lower bitrate offering could be useful to ‘non power’ users who just tootle along on home videos or YouTube?
