The first water I could not see the other side of was Lake Michigan, here in USA. Later that day, that was spoiled when I was taken to the top of the Willis Tower (Sears Tower in those days). From there, you could see all around the southern shore to Michigan on the other side.

Just zooming with a phone I clearly can see a basement of lighthouse in there!
