Got a question: I saw that England and English Heritage reopened today. Since I have to use up a week of vacation till the end of September I thought I might head to England.
Would I be right with this:
- you're normally not allowed to fly FROM English Heritage sites (unless you have a permit which seems rather bothersome).
- you're allowed to fly over EH sites if you're 50 m away from people and the buildings with people inside, regardless of the opening hours?
Would be glad for your insight.

Yep - you are not permitted to take off or land from/on national heritage trust land unless you have their permission in writing and they will charge you significantly for it if they issue a permit at all. You can fly over the land if you take off from an adjacent public field which has not banned drones. However, you must be 150m away from any congested areas such as villages or landmarks and 50m away from people and buildings which includes not flying directly over them.

That said, if you crash the drone onto Heritage trust land you will have far more than losing your drone to contend with and if your drone is spotted you can bet your bottom dollar that Rangers will be looking for you and the Police will be called... Honestly, it isn't worth it. And if your drone crashed into say a Tudor period building = game over mate!

Isn't there the rule that local landowner can only prohibit your taking off/landing from his land but not flying over it?So flying around cathedrals would be out of the question?

In England Cathedrals tend to only be found in cities - so a double no, no if flying by the book.

I see they have dedicated a whole article to it mate - they have armies of rangers all over the place. Honestly, I wouldn't go there (to fly a drone anyway).

Still loads of beautiful spots around the country but I have always avoided heritage trust areas - including flying over them. The lake district is just as beautiful and permits drones weighing less than 7kg - but you'll need to pass the UK CAA test and register yourself to get the flyer and operator ID's if your drone weighs 250g or more.

Technically nobody owns the airspace so you can fly over private land as long as you adhere to all of the other rules. Airspace is regulated by the CAA and not the person below it on the ground. Equally, the CAA does not regulate the land so you can not physically walk onto private land to take off without the land owners permission (trespass).

I never get anyone come up to me complaining mate - location and timing is of course essential. Early weekend mornings when most sane people are asleep or a wide open park on a work day and hardly anyone is around.

Most people just walk past or are fascinated by it - the only drones I have flown where people have made snide remarks is when flying my phantoms back in my earlier days of the hobby when drones were not as popular or understood.

If you zoom in on some of my photos you'll see people sat down on benches 400' below and they are not looking up as they have no idea a drone is above them... You will notice a massive difference in the noise of between the MA and MA2. The MA2 is nearly as quiet as a Mavic Pro Platinum.
