No it would not be wrong at all.
Because there is no/little ground cover, the land is eroding away generating more desert-like conditions and contributing to eutrophication of the ocean.
The outback was once a forest 5 million years ago (the Nullarbor plains area)
'what about current wildlife' well it was a forest before, the life forms adapted to what it is now, since it have been both a desert and forest, there is no right or wrong in earth's perspective (only in the humans limited perspectives). But more water means more life, and less erosion, so for the sake of a healthy planet the global ecosystem gains from forests, not deserts.
