Below a wish list that would be nice if DJI could confirm/comment if they are already deployed in the Inspire 1 platform or planned to be soon. Or at least a wish list of ideas that could be discussed.

Please add more ideas wishes below and comment!

Flight Control - Modes
------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Banked Turn mode (the roll and yaw sticks are combined to help you perform banked turns with only one hand) as in A2 FC
  • Set Cruise Speed mode as in A2 FC
  • Continuous Speed Cruise as in A2 FC
  • Point-Of-Interest (POI) flight mode as in e.g. A2 or Wookong-M
  • Circle-Of-Interest (COI) flight mode where the pilot draws a circle/elipse/freehand pattern around an object on the map in the DJI Pilot App
  • Follow-Me "Advanced Dynamic Home Point" to follow the pilot movements either with camera FOV pointed to pilot or locked on a target
  • Waypoints with camera settings: set height, camera FOV, and speed per waypoint

Single Operator Control
------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Possibility to control the camera movement "Yaw" with the two unassigned buttons on the back of the radio Left/Right

Special Features
------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Camera function: Automatic Panorama Horisontal 360° Panorama, starts a cycle program rotating camera and taking still photos
  • Camera function: Automatic Panorama Vertical Panorama, starts a cycle program tilting camera and taking still photos
  • Camera function: Possibility to both taking photos and record video at the same time
  • Camera function: Add Infolabel(s) on/off directly on a photo copy with aircraft height when photo where taken, iso, f-stop, and other camera meta data and store the legend version of the photo like.... original photo DSC0001.DNG or JPG  -> legend photo DSC0001_info.JPG
In settings choose which info to be merged into the DSCxxxxx_info.JPG

DJI Pilot App (IOS/Android)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Some kind of on/off Voice feature: a voice "says" critical flight data e.g. warning of battery, which flight mode has been activated etc

Best regards
Peter

Peter,

Thank you for your thoughtful post.  Since the Inspire controller is based on the A2, some of the features you requested are possible.  I don't know if they are on the developmental schedule for the Inspire.  POI is already apart of the Inspire firmware as is Dynamic Home Point.  The ground station functions will follow with future firmware upgrades.  We appreciate your input.

I approve of that answer Ed.

Tell me, do you have any insight at all on what those two buttons on the back of the controller are intended for?  Obviously they had something in mind when designing it.

I agree with Peter though, having some way to pan the camera in single pilot mode would be very nice.  Hopefully the inclusion of GS will allow for more complex flight and camera configurations in the future.  It seems that most, if not all of that is a matter of software, rather than any hardware limitations.

The newest App that I got had the option to program those two buttons, C1 and C2, for specific functions.  Since I could not arm my motors with that App, I have downgraded to one that allows the motors to arm and I can fly.  By the time these ship, I am sure that they will have the App sorted out.
When I am running a single operator set up, I just yaw the craft for panning.  I guess I could have the second Tx near me to control it but I don't see it as necessary.

Was just thinking something.  Is the rate at which the camera pans with the control stick (on slaved remote) fixed, or is it based on the amount of stick movement?

Just wondering, because even if it becomes possible to program those C1/C2 buttons to pan, it would have to be a fixed rate.  No biggie, and I get your point about just yawing the drone for panning.

It will be fun to see what kind of shots can be accomplished in single pilot mode, just by controlling and coordinating the attitude of the drone.

Excellent  and thoughtful features request, peter! I would love to see some of these capabilities incorporated in future app upgrades.
I have some further questions and requests:

Is the pan rate now linear or can it be programmed to respond exponentially as per Futaba 14SG? What about tilt rate?

Is Exif data stored with each DNG and/or JPEG exposure? If not, can it be?

I have not noticed any propeller flicker in the posted inspire videos as often experienced with the P2/Hero combo when flying with sun high overhead. Is this a non-issue? If it does occur, could a hood be developed that would mount on the filter ring to block it?

How is POI determined? Does it require selecting it on the map? Is the radius of the flight path selectable?

Can't wait till I get my hands on this beast!

Thanks, Ed,

Appreciate the prompt response. I'm still confused about how the point around which to fly POI is selected. Could you explain to a dummy who never had POI available with his P2 (sans GS)?
And how does one control the craft to fly around this point, so that the camera remains on it?

Excellent post, Peter. I'm new to quadcopters but about to take the plunge with the Inspire.

May I add...

Does the Inspire camera offer Cinestyle or ProTune equivalent picture style? Something that can easily be color graded in post.

During POI or waypoint flight, can a single operater take dedicated control of the camera including yaw of the camera gimbal?

And finally, does there exist a mode that can "lock on" to a subject, say with a tap of the screen, so that the drone can automatically follow it and camera can automatically keep it framed, or that the camera alone can automatically keep the subject framed but allow manual flight to follow/circle it?

Thanks!

In generel I realy love the Idea of the Inspire 1.
But a 3K specialised videocopter should give me, as an "pro-consumer / cinematpgrapher",
more real advantages over the 1.5K cheaper Phantom Vision+.

What needs a pro-consumer Videocopter in the year 2014/15?

1)POI
2)Follow-Mode
3)3D Bezier-Waypoints
4)Opportunity to use a camera of  choice

It's ok, that DJI builds their own cameras for the entry level.
But a cinematograph always knows which camera is the best for him and he wants to use it.

So, if there will be an little software-update and a version without the fixed 4K Camera (like the normal Phantom 2)
...I and  many people with my interest will order lots of Inspire 1 immediately ...now it's your turn DJI ;-)

PS: the Walkera Scout X4 has already integrated all this functions for the half price.

Pat

I don't see any point in having yaw control with a single pilot. You just point the camera they way you want it and use the stick to control aircraft direction forward/back and left/right as needed. You can also use course lock and home lock if you want to fly in a straight line and yaw the aircraft (and camera) as needed.

You're probably right Chris.  Maybe I'm just a control freak. ;)

I don't have a lot of experience flying drones, so I have a lot to learn in flying something other than fixed wing aircraft.  I also have pretty much zero experience flying FPV.  I'm pretty confident that with practice, I'll be getting some nice panning and rotating shots.  I really can't wait to get started.

@patfish.  This is not a "it does everything for everybody" copter.  If it does not meet your needs as it currently sits, I  would not expect it to change much right now.  There will be enhancements later but no right off the bat.

@Ed.  Am I correct in thinking that most, if not all of these advanced flight control features are really just a matter of developing the software/firmware?

I can understand a lot of it not being available at launch.  It takes time to program and test that kind of stuff, but you also want to get your product to market as soon as you can, and the Inspire 1 is already a well rounded platform for the price.

Can we at least assume that DJI is committed to the further development of the Inspire 1's software capabilities, if only to maintain a competitive edge in the drone market?

How about a configurable button that let you switch one of the RC control sticks between two modes..

One mode is regular for Copter-Control.. but if you hold this button down, this stick can be used to fully control the kamera - so tilt and yaw the camera with this control stick..
when releasing the button, you are back in Copter-Control..

This would be perfect for single operator mode.. camera control is much more precise with a control stick.. and if you use the left stick for this dual mode, you are still able to control the aircraft with the richt stick in parallel..

Will it have a super simple flying mode.  By this I mean the unit knows where the controller is pretty much all of the time. So using this information the unit will always go away from you when the stick is pushed away an always to your right when stick is pushed right and so on.  This makes it much easier for you to fly and record alone and keeps person flying from becoming confused no matter where camera is pointed if there are 2 of you.

I would also like to see an automated panorama function i the app.
Not just 360° but it would be nice to be able to shoot 180°
I'm also wondering if the camera/gimbal is capable of turning to portrait format to shoot panorama with better coverage.

From my perspective there will be times that I want to keep the orientation of the Inspire in a specific location and yaw the camera.

I want to do this by having a function that will allow me to switch between yaw of the quad and yaw of the camera.

In the UK we will pay nearly £2500 for the Inspire and I don't see why I should buy an additional controller and have and other person with me to do that!

I'm sure it must be entirely feasible to do what I have suggested given the immense technology within this quad.

I sincerely hope that DJI will adopt this as the Inspire sits between the amateur and professional level. The amateur will not have the resources to employ an additional person to yaw the camera.

Hello, as a karting racer I'm very keen on the follow me feature.

What you need is the solo shoot. http://www.soloshot.com/ You put a tag on the object you want to follow and the camera will tilt, pan, and zoom as needed to follow the tag.

A Mode Called - TRIPOD MODE

Would be nice. Basically a mode where anyone could set the height for instance 30ft. Turn on Tripod mode it disables any flight and just enables full use of the camera. 360 degree side to side and up and down movement as well with the use of a single controller. Then disable tripod mode and camera is locked forward for flight and only has up and down movement.

There are times where 2 controllers are important for many reason's and SAFETY being a very important one. But there are lots of other times where one controller would be enough with a mode called tripod mode as well.

Im looking forward to the shipping of my inspire. From everything i've seen and read it's an awesome product.

Just as an additionally cool feature which I would enjoy:
- An automatic panorama feature. Beside videography panoramas will be one of the things i will do most often.

With automatic I mean a mode where it turns around on its own and shots maybe 15 or so overlapping pictures.
Before and after this row there is a black picture added on the sd card or they are grouped in a folder.
This would probably improve the workflow for panoramas a lot.

But maybe someone else will use the dev-kit and program an app for such stuff?

Hello everyone,
These are very important needs to complete the lags we were facing in  the phantom earlier models, especially the camera yaw even when using a single controller.
Another important issue is to try to include voice recording and embedding it automatically with the recorded video, without the need to record sound separately, and try to find the frames to match audio with video frames.
We need a clear response from DJI about the camera yaw even when using a single controller.
