The castle of Arteaga is a neo-medieval palace, a neo-Gothic keep as a keep inspired by French Gothic architecture when Romanticism made it fashionable again.
Neo-Gothicism recovered from the past the pointed arches, the gargoyles with animal figures, the twin openings and the characteristic elements of medieval castle architecture: the battlements, the merlons, the matacones, etc.
This palace-castle is located in a privileged area of the Urdaibai estuary, not far from the historic town of Guernica. Unlike the Spanish defensive castles, it is not located in an elevated area, but in a plain or meadow, surrounded by trees and other vegetation. Also in this respect, it resembles the Château de Fontainebleau and other French royal residences.
