Phantom 2 uses 2.4ghz
Phantom 2 Vision and Vision + use 5.8ghz

newbie and want to purchase one and just doing my homework to make sure i get the best and correct setup i can.

You will get better range with 2.4 Ghz, but either one is good. Depends on what you are going to want to do. Fly for distance or just fly for video. Either one can be modified for extended range..
