I just received a new TB48 battery which is presently on the charger. Does it have to be installed and updated in the Inspire?

Yes, first put on the card the latest firmware and then lights inspire with new battery and wait for it to update

Sounds like a "sketchy " update process. How do I know it`s complete?

It is pretty easy, the battery light will change the flash rate the Inspire tail light will stop and restart (then its finished). Its been awhile since I did my batteries. If you have more than one battery you will get the hang of it. Doesn't take but a few minutes to complete.

It's a lot easier than guessing lights as I still could not tell when it was finished. Listen for the beeps from it. Four beeps in row means its still updating. One beep followed by two more beeps means its finished. This is in the manual BTW.
