I had a chance to try out my Freewell's Anamorphics lens with my Mavic Air 2. The drone flew great with the filter on the gimble over a long distance. The filter is easy to mount on the gimble without issue. The desqueezing and editing was done via Adobe Premier Pro 2020. The footage was shot at West Baden Spring Resort in Indiana. U.S.

Although I fully understand the principles of anamorphic lenses and their role in cinema industry, the reason to employ such for social media publication escapes my imagination. Would you kindly throw some light on benefits, perhaps not visible here? Thank you in advance ...

It's because drone videography/photography is more than just for social media.  Drone photography, it's a form of art, and anamorphics filter is one of tools, as anamorphics lens  to drone videography as camera on drones. Why have an anamorphics filter for camera on drone? Why not? The filter give the video a much more field of view than the 16X9 aspect ratios, but most of all, it looks damn good on my wide screen monitor.

"The filter give the video a much more field of view than the 16X9 aspect ratios"

What is the video frame size of your final render in pixels (resolution), if you don't mind to share this information?,

"... but most of all, it looks damn good on my wide screen monitor... "

That alone is a reason good enough to pursue the idea. I hope it looks much better than standard 3840 x 2160 video.

Good job, I’ve found it hard now to leave off my drone when videoing the results are so pleasing.

Hi, Matthew,

The final resolution of the rendering is 3840 X1440

besides the anamorphics filter is only $40. It's something nice to have in your camera bag.

Hi, Matthew,

The final resolution of the rendering is 3840 X1440

Yeah, that's what I was suspecting ... See, this is nothing better nor different than cropping the top and bottom portions of a standard 4K (3840 x 2160) frame in post, which will give you the same wide aspect ratio. The attachment may produce this desired anamorphic look and appeal, but at the expense of image resolution (quality). If you'll be able to utilize all real estate of the sensor, capturing pinched 3840 x 2160 video and de-squeezing in post to - say - 5107 x 2160 video frame size ... oh yes, that'll be the real McCoy! But, if you like what you see, that's all what counts ...

Were you able to use the gimble lock while the anamorphics lens attached to the gimble?

No, it's not like cropping the top and bottom of the screen. You will get the wider field of view without the distortion of the wide angle lens. The anamorphics' len squeezed the image onto the standard sensor, hence, you will have to desqueeze the image in post. the 3840 is the 4K video and the 1440 will desqueeze the image into anamorphics form.

I could get it on , but felt it was just a little too tight so opted not to leave on while traveling or storing the drone.

Forget 4K video format for a while ... Can you de-squeeze 3840x 2160 anamorph-ed recording into Whatever x 2160 and export to a new video file? That may be in conflict with YT standards, but should be playable on your monitor without quality loss. I do this quite often for archiving, utilizing 5472 x 3648 still images for super hi-res hyper lapse with Mavic 2 Pro ...
EDIT: Well, I stand corrected. Further investigation of de-squeezing trickery within Adobe Premiere Pro revealed that indeed 4K video of standard 3840 x 2160 frame size is played back accordingly wider without noticeable loss of image quality. Grabbed frame is of 3840 x 2160 size, while playback is of 5120 x 2160 size for 1.333 aspect ratio.

All we need now is a camera with good quality anamorphic lens, perhaps optional.

Anamorphic lens, maybe on Mavic 3 Pro? As an optional interchangeable lens!!! I am really good this year Santa! Despite it's 2020

Yes, they did. Moment has one for M2P.  It's on sale now.  This anamorphic lens  is the correct 1.33 aspect ratios than the 1.15 aspect ratios of Freewell's lens, but the lens is heavy and very tricky mount onto the M2P's gimble. It also has the potential of damaging the gimble itself.

Yeah,  I really don't like the moment version,  thats why its a shame Freewell don't do one for the M2P in the same style.
