Here's the short one: Started by William de Warenne, a norman conquerer. Later it was much enlarged and strengthened. Around 1200 the castle was finished.
The same family founded Castle Acre Priory.
William first built a fortified manor house. Around 1140 the house was strengthened, 1165 the front part was dismantled and the back part built up into a "great tower".
