I recently switched from a Spark to an Air 2 and I was surprised that the Air 2 can get away with only 26 photos for a sphere, compared to the 46 photos of the Spark (while having similar FOV). So I looked a little bit into it and it seems like the Spark had a probably unnecessarily large overlap. Let me just share my findings, maybe you'll find it useful.


This is from the Spark, circles show the centers of the images, I highlighted two to see the overlap. I actually tried stitching the panorama without the entire second row (28, 31, 35, 39, ...), giving only 34 images, and it still worked perfectly.



And the one below is with the Air 2.

I did the same thing for the 180° pano, because interestingly both the  Spark and the MA2 takes 21 photos there: 3 rows with 7 photos in each  row. Seems like the MA2 could not get away with only 2 rows, so it takes  3 rows with a great overlap, similarly to the Spark.
