A plane was involved in one of the UK's closest recorded near-misses with a drone in the skies above Greater Manchester.
The incident involved an Airbus A320 aircraft flying at 8,000ft over having just taken off from Manchester Airport, according to a report by the UK Airprox Board (UKAB).

Both pilots in the cockpit of the Easyjet Manchester-to-Athens flight "saw a large drone pass very close to the aircraft windscreen", the inquiry found.
The drone was described as blue, around 50cm long and weighing "at least 10kg".

Separation between the aircraft and the flying gadget was officially listed as "zero".
The UKAB put the September 4 incident in the most serious risk category because "a definite risk of collision had existed".

Another Stupid Drone Pilot going to ruin it for us all.

There will be stupid pilots (unfortunately) for as long as there are drones.

Why in the world would you be at 8000 ft. near any airport, let alone an international airport ?
My drone would be lucky if it saw 300 ft.

Doesn't sounds like a drone you'd buy from Argos though.

Annoying when people do that - more excuses to impose more restrictions.

Is there any way that DJI could check the drone records from drones that may have been in that location on that particular day and time ?

Not your average Prosumer drone at that size and weight, or at that height. Is it reported, over what location the incident occured?

Let's hope he's also stupid enough to upload his video of the incident to Youtube. That would resolve the case pretty quick.

As if they even need an excuse. Just playing into their hands.

It does make you wonder - no mention of it in the press - and it's the sort of story they love to blow up out of all proportion, substantiated or not.

Furthermore, who's to say it wasn't a commercial drone? Or state-sponsored for that matter...

Under 10000ft ASL we can safely assume >250kts, let's assume he's doing minimum air control speed rated at 119kts, that's 136mph, MINIMUM. Let's assume the drone was static.
How on earth were they able to properly identify (not only identify but have enough time to estimate weight, size, and COLOR) anything that small at that speed?
Not only this, but there are a very limited amount of drones on the market that could reasonably achieve this altitude.
Something seems a little off if you ask me.
I'm not downplaying the fact that this was a potentially dangerous situation, but some of the information reported seems improbable.

I don't have a drone... But I'm curious... Does common dornes fly so high? How can he tell the weight of the drone? I cannot tell the weight of at 4 carrots by looking... And I suppose it passes really fast through the drone, he still had time to see it's color and size!!! Probably it was a professional drone... don't know...

This is so frustrating to read about.  I really enjoy flying.  It's just going to make things harder on us hobbyist..... and part 107s for that matter.
