That is terrible! Before I flew the first time (or first few times) I did a lot of research. I also practiced with the aircraft in each mode. Just as you would with anything new, you want to get a feel for how the aircraft reacts in odd situations (atti mode (no compass), wind, flying close to buildings). That way, when an emergency arises, you are familiar with how to react.

Also, do not let people discourage you from coming to this forum. There are always helpful individuals around and a lot of great information can be found here.
