I tried talking to a pilot, went as expected.

I was working the Sertoma Duck Races in Nixa MO. I noticed a Phantom 3 hovering over the crowd. 5500 people said they were attending on facebook, the place was packed, and here's a Phantom hovering over the crowd... sigh.

I tell my partner  I'm going to find the pilot, and attempt to have a gentle discussion with him, but figure he'll blow me off. I watch the bird for a while, then it starts flashing red. Oh great, this guy is over people and isn't going to leave any reserve in the battery either. I watch it come down and find a lady hand catching it, and a fellow flying it. I start off with hey buddy I've got a P3P too! Hey did you do the firmware updates? No, hey I wouldn't bother man.

Then I say hey it's pretty gutsy flying over the crowd huh? He's like yeah!!!
Pretty dangerous huh? No way man, I haven't had any problems, well one time I did, but Atti mode got it back.

I say I dunno, I've been flying a while and failures can and do happen, I think it's pretty dangerous over the crowd.

He's like no way, I'm cool.

I say well listen, this is the type of flying that will get this hobby banned. He's like hell yea!

I say ummm that's not a good thing, I really like flying.

He says I don't see what the big deal is, I have insurance.

Seeing this wasn't going anywhere I said have a nice day, but I won't be standing anywhere near that bird.

The next day I fire up my hand built quad, and it flys fine for a while and then doesn't want to bank right, and starts drifting to the left. No big deal, I'm at my usual field, I set it down and investigate. But all the while I'm thinking, SEE!!!! Unexpected landings happen!!!! I took the P3P up, it flew flawlessly. So far my bird has been great, but I've been flying home builts for years and have come to fear the machines. I love flying, but I'm pretty serious about safety and maintaining separation from people and objects.

Ugh, I looked the guy up, he's got a drone business. He's not Section 333 exempt or anything, just a dude with a Phantom who thinks it can't possibly come down unexpected.

That response blew me away, I'm like did he misunderstand? Why's he so hell yeah about banning the hobby as he's standing here holding a phantom in front of me???? Also, I THINK I'm insured too, I've told my carrier I like flying these things... but that doesn't mean much. It doesn't mean they'll service a claim, it's insurance's job to not service claims.

I think his reply may have come from his realizing that you were going to scold him.  His response was designed to get rid of you.

I was in a similar situation, saw a drone over the crowd and went to ask the pilot why (s)he was flying so dangerously.  As I walked, I noticed a lot of people pointing to the drone.  The drone flew away and I lost track of it.

I wish there was something that could be done to enforce safe flying.  By the time any authority arrives, the pilot and drone are long gone.

The electronics in these drones allows just about anyone to fly them.  There is no device, yet, than can force proper operation.

xaq7, these guys are EVERYWHERE, and when (not if) one of them does something stupid and somebody gets seriously injured or worse, authorities will trip over each other to enact Draconian measures to ban drones in every town, city, park, state, etc..

Feel free to contact your local FAA Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Specialist for Flight Standards whenever you see stuff like this. He/she can't do much other than send out a letter admonishing the idiot pilot, but that might be enough to nudge some of these wayward ships back on course.

It is in the best interest of every responsible UAV pilot to ensure safe and responsible drone operations happen whenever we can.

If you know his name, report him. Maybe try to find his footage on YouTube and include that in the report?
