Tonight sees the biggest change in UK drone rules we've ever seen.  Gone is the distinction between commercial & hobbyist and in comes a sweeping new framework of rules based on flight risk category and drone risk classification. Everyone flying in the UK from 31 Dec 2020 is affected and for the first time you will be legally allowed to take off from your back garden in some instances.  And at the same time, everyone owning a drone in the UK is suddenly the owner of an unclassified Legacy Drone that is to be treated very differently.

So here's an effort to summarise these insanely complex new rules from the 238 page CAP 722 document and the quite lovely 1-page CAP2012 document.

Thank you for the detailed overview! I spent a few hours yesterday unravelling the same regulation details in Norway.

One question: is it the OperatorId that needs to be affixed to the drone? Does the operator id change once a year after each €18 payment (price in Norway)?

By the way, another positive thing coming from the new rules, it is now posisble to by after sunset and during night. The old rules stipulated that the Sun had to be no lower than 5 degres below the horizon.
