Whenever a get a notice that a newer firmware is available I have alway updated the firmware immediately. If I were to ignore the notice can I keep flying under old firmware or will after a certain amount of time will I be grounded and forced to update? I know a lot of people are unhappy with the current firmware so has anyone been  able to keep an earlier one and continue to fly?

You can continue to fly without updating. If you decide to update, keep in mind that it's not possible to roll back.

And we know in the future that there will be a government mandated update that we will all choose to defer on.
