For a DJI Forum Moderator

Can you explain why the DJI Fly App now requires permission to access the mobile device's contacts?  I can see why the App needs access to location and storage but can't see a valid reason for needing access to my Contacts.  Could these and other excessive permissions required in the last 2 updates be the reason why DJI is no longer posting updates on the Google Play Store?  

Below is list of currently required permissions.

It doesn't seem necessary to read the contact information,   thats a bit much really.

I really don’t think should be asking for contacts, ridiculous.

The reason for Contact permissions is for sharing media from the Fly app to others. This permission isn't necessary to operate the Air 2 or Minis. The only permissions I have granted to the Fly app are Location (Only while app is in use) and Storage.

I wonder if its a particular Android OS that is causing this.  Definitely unnecessary for contacts access.  iOS 14.x access permissions for DJI Fly doesn't have the same issue...

The strangest thing is that the new version 1.2.4 WAS INSTALLED THROUGH THE GALAXY STORE !!!! and the rights of the application remained as they were from GOOGLE STORE !!!! (screenshot)
The strangest thing is that the other application MIMO, although it exists in the GALAXY STORE was not installed !!!  

I HAVE NOT INSTALLED THE NEW FIRMWARE v01.01.0610 AND I HAVE NOT CHECKED THAT EVERYTHING IS OK WITH THE FLIGHT.

Check your phone and change the permissions.

DATA HARVESTING would be the 1st PHRASE that comes to mind.

The software developers need to recover their development costs some how and selling your data is a great way, the joys of "free" software.

During the installation version 1.2.4 it took over the rights from the 1.2.1 version (storage access and location). Rights for phone and contacts i have refused during earlier installations and it still works perfect without.

If you subsequently want to “share” you flight videos or live feed, your contacts will have the info needed to send.  If you don’t see a use for the feature, simply reply “no.”

The thread is a few hudred posts long but you'll get the basic "it's our way or the highway" jist and sentament.  Largely perception but its info and how others may feel none the less

The contact information access could be the reason that the DJI Fly app is not available in the Android Play Store.  It may in some way violate the Terms of Service in how the data is used or collected.

Usually this comes in the wording of " Help us improve our product by letting us monitor any changes or problems on your device"  (no) read it or not, see if who ever ask if No is an  choice option and the app lets you finish installing. Problem is it's their game.

Contracts use to be to protect the company against consumer law suit and now it's to take more. And we as consumers need more protection.

Hi, DowntownRDB. Thanks for reaching out! There is a lot of permission required while downloading and installing the DJI Fly. For DJI Fly, access to Contacts is optional, and disabling it would not impact usage. Typically, access to Contacts is needed during sharing photos/videos with others. Hope this information helps.
