Hello!

Some time ago, I got myself the Pocket 2 Creator Combo. I was excited about the possibilities about using the camera with my phone, as the Do-it-all-handle was included with the combo. I was hopeful about using my phone to wirelessly control the gimbal, as my phone successfully ran DJI Mimo. BUT! What DJI didn't tell us is that NOT ALL versions of DJI Mimo work with Pocket 2. My current phone only runs an outdated version of the program that refuses to recognise Pocket 2. It was a disappointing observation, as you need a compatible phone to even enable the basic functionalities of the camera (why on earth is there an activation required, I have never heard that any other camera would have required it for just being able to use it!). I finally managed to activate it, as my friend (luckily enough) has a phone that is compatible with the Pocket 2 and kindly lended it for me so I could activate it. Luckily, it can be used independently after that, but I still miss the abilities that having a compatible phone would let me use.

I personally think DJI hasn't done well enough to inform the buyer about which phones are compatible with Pocket 2. The Pocket 2 product page itself does no state clearly enough that only some select phone models are compatible with it - the information is hidden on the Mimo app page. And even that information is lacking, as: A) even after mentioning the Android version and USB connector type, they don't mention that those are not the only requirements for the camera to work with the phone, B) even some Micro USB phones work when using the proper adapter, and C) the list of the compatible phones is ridiculously small, considering there are literally thousands of Android devices - mentioning just a bit over 30 models (some of which are not even available new anymore) is only a minor fragment of that amount.

While I do understand that they can't just go and buy each and every model separately, I still think they should be able to define the system requirements in a more specific manner (through emulation testing etc.). But as it seems that they are unable to do that, I suggest that we collect our own test results here for users to make it easier to find out which phones work with the Pocket 2 and which do not.

So if you have tested DJI Pocket 2 with a phone other than one of phones listed in DJI Mimo's page, please reply to this thread and tell others what were your results with the phone.

For those looking to use a tablet with DJI Pocket 2, there is a sister thread for them. To see if your tablet is compatible or to report test results of your tablet, see https://forum.dji.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=237518

Last update on troubleshooting tips and phone model lists on February 15th, 2024

Update: If you test a phone model and don't seem to get it to work, try these quick fixes first:
#1 - Make sure you have downloaded the Mimo app from DJI's own website ( https://www.dji.com/fi/downloads/djiapp/dji-mimo ) or APKMirror (https://www.apkmirror.com/?post_ ... type=apk&s=DJI+Mimo) instead of Google Play Store if you are using Android. According to some sources, the Google Play Store version is outdated and the app should now be downloaded and updated by DJI's own site or APKMirror. You may also have to uninstall the previous version before installing the version from Mimo's own website or APKMirror. To see further information, see this thread: https://forum.dji.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=242211

#2 - Check the wireless network frequency setting of your Mimo app settings. Some devices use 2,4 GhZ, others use 5,8 GhZ. If the Auto setting or one of the specific frequency settings doesn't work, try the other one. To see more about this issue, see the threads at https://forum.dji.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=229629 and https://forum.dji.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=247715 . Be sure to restart the Mimo app in order to the changed setting to take place! Also, if your version of Mimo app doesn't have the frequency setting, see if you can get an earlier version of Mimo app (you can find many at https://www.apkmirror.com/?post_ ... type=apk&s=DJI+Mimo), install it, change the frequency there then reinstall or update to the newer version.

#3 - Sometimes problems may occur due to an physically or communicatively unstable connection between the Pocket 2 and the phone. On some occasions, using a protective case can prevent the connector from going as far as required, or it's possible magnetic shielding can disrupt the communication between the two devices, thus causing errors; on other cases, without the protective case  there might be a gap between the phone and Pocket 2 that makes the connection wobbly and causes communication errors, while using with the case stabilizes the camera to the phone by filling up the gap and fixes the issue. If you have problems with a protective case, try removing it and try again. Also, vise versa: if the connection is erratic without a case, try putting the phone into one and try again. One more possible fix: If you have a phone clip (either the official DJI one or one of the third-party ones), try using that with the phone and Pocket 2 and see if that helps.

#4 - Ensure you have updated the phone operating system to the required version. The Mimo app requires at least Android 7.0, or iOS 11.0 for the Apple devices. Newer versions of operating systems might need a certain version of the Mimo app for it to work. Latest Android version confirmed to work with the latest version of Mimo app is Android 13. UPDATE: A DJI representative has officially stated that Mimo version 1.5.4 is not compatible with Android 12, so if you are using that version of Android, make sure you have a newer version of Mimo. (UPDATE: Some Android updates may possibly break previously working functionality even on same Android, so check that before updates, or search/wait for a newer version of the Mimo app.)

#5 - If possible, see if you can rule out the possibility of having a faulty USB-C or Lightning adapter by using the same adapter on a different, compatibility-tested phone or tablet. If the connection works with the same adapter on another phone or tablet, it confirms that the adapter is working. If not, it could be that the adapter itself is faulty.

#6 - Sometimes, the device or apps may have power-saving options that interfere with the connection between the Pocket 2 and the device. If you have power-saving options on, try disabling them and connecting again to see if that makes any difference. The power management options for the apps can be found on some devices by swiping down in the home screen, then tapping on the image of a gear, then tapping on "Battery", then "Battery Usage Optimization". (Do bear in mind the exact route, menu names etc. can vary between different devices.) That should list the power management settings for each app in your device, and you can choose which power management option to use, or turn it completely off for that app. While that could make your device's battery run out faster, it also could help solve the problem by preventing the required functions from shutting down due to battery optimization.

#7 - If you are attempting to connect the Pocket 2 wirelessly to your phone and your device is not found, make sure you have enabled both Bluetooth and wifi on your phone. The Mimo app needs both for wireless connection to Pocket 2 (the Bluetooth for finding the nearby devices,  and the wifi for rest of the operations).

#8 - If you can't establish a connection through the main physical connection of the Pocket 2, try using a USB-C to USB-A adapter, connect your phone's data cable to that adapter and then connect them to the bottom USB-C port of the Pocket 2. Also, you may want to try using a straight USB-C to Micro-USB cable if you have one. Some models may not work using the 'basic' connector, but may work when used with these adapters and USB ports.

#9 - If connecting physically, make sure the connections aren't bent or dirty. If they are, there might be communication errors between the Pocket 2 and the other device.

#10 - If your device uses VPN for network connection, try disabling that and connecting again. There have been reports of VPN disrupting the connection between the phone and the Pocket 2 that were solved when the VPN was disabled.

#11 - If you get the app running but the playback monitoring is laggy, you could see if you can solve the issue by enabling software decoding option from the Mimo settings. This is done by following these steps:
1)Physically connect the phone to the Pocket 2.
2)When accessing the monitoring and control screen, tap the three dots on the lower left corner of the screen.
3)After that, click on the four squares symbol (looking like a window) which should appear on the lower left corner of the screen.
4)From the menu appearing after that, select 'More' if your app language is English, 'Mehr' if it's German or the corresponding selection in your language. (It is the last option on the menu.)
5)From the following info/setting screen, tap on the 'Software Decoding' slider. (It could be called differently on your language selection, but again, it is the last option with the slider in the menu.)
You can see more about this at https://forum.dji.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=278216
Thanks for zciUKm88uBnUtbtd0pL4ZA2 and CopterSpy for pointing this out!

#12 - If the app works but your preview on the phone is completely black, flickers or gets stuck, you could check the thread at https://forum.dji.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=279398 and the page at https://support.dji.com/help/con ... Id=34&re=gb&lang=en for further instruction on troubleshooting the issue. Whule the first link mostly applies to drones, the camera settings part can also be applied to the Pocket series cameras.

#13 - Try clearing previous app cache and data following these instructions:
1. While you still have the Play Store version installed, in Android, go  to Settings > Apps > DJI MIMO (yours might have different structure depending on which brand you are using)
2. Perform a "Clear data" and "Clear cache" of the MIMO app. Typically all Android phones have these.
3. Uninstall the MIMO app.
4. Download the MIMO app from the official DJI website or APKmirror (https://www.apkmirror.com/?post_ ... type=apk&s=DJI+Mimo), and install it. Your phone might block you from installing APK due to security restrictions, try to set it as a trusted source and install it. Different brands or file explorer apps might act differently when installing APKs, so check how it can be done on your model.
5. Now open the app and it should work fine. If not, try to perform another "Clear data" and "Clear cache" of the MIMO app and open again.
Thanks for username luluismo for supplying us with this tip at https://forum.dji.com/forum.php? ... =261854&pid=2827223 !

#14 - If using with the DIA Handle and a phone for wireless operation, and the connection seems to occasionally cut off and on, see if there are wifi networks that interfere with the phone connection. This can occur especially if you have setup a home wifi connection to the same phone you are trying to use the Pocket 2 with. If this happens, for instance at your home, see if it still occurs when you are doing the test outside of the range of the wifi network (in this example, test the Pocket 2, the phone and the DIA Handle connection outside your home). You can also check this out by seeing the network settings the time the cutoff occurs: if the network being connected to mentions a network name other than the network of the Pocket 2, this is a likely cause for the problem. Possible solutions involve trying to switch to different frequency, making the device forget the interfering network from the phone settings, or switching to another device when applicable.

#15 - If the camera is brand new, it could be that the contacts of it could still be a bit 'stiff'. If you have trouble getting the smartphone adapters to work, try inserting and the removing the adapter a couple of times or 'wiggling' it in its place up and down or sideways while inserted on the Pocket 2. Sometimes, this could help connection problems after initial troubles.

#16 - If there are problems connecting on an Android device, you could try this troubleshooting tip provided by DJI Paladin:

For the Android system mobile devices:
1. Set the IP to DHCP (dynamic) and input 192.168.2.100 in the IP address column. Then, try again.
2. If the issue persists, switch it to a static IP to reconnect and retry.
3. Switch to DHCP (dynamic) and then input the IP. Reconnect to it.

LIST STYLING UPDATE: From now on, the list styling will be changed. The phones will be categorized according to the manufacturers instead of the Working-Not working, division. Each phone mentioned under these  will be marked with a OFFICIAL, YES or NO and color-coded accordingly to show  whether the model will work with the Pocket 2  or not. Also, the release date of the model is mentioned (when available) to distinguish similarly-named models from different years and to also gather data for a so-called Breaking Point- theory, the thought of being that there is a certain point where later models of the same model series will all be compatible after the first compatible model in the model series. While not confirmed nor debunked at the moment, gathering this information will show if the theory applies or not. This hopefully helps users to find their device faster to see whether it can be used for the activation process and/or remote control.  Special thanks to username Defleur for inspiring this new listing style!

KEY:
OFFICIAL - The phone is officially mentioned on the DJI's own compatibility list and will work with the Pocket 2.
YES - The phone completely or partially works with the Pocket 2 and can be used to activate and/or control the Pocket 2.

NO - The phone doesn't work with the Pocket 2.

If you find such a model, please do inform about it in this thread.

Sony Xperia 5 works without any problems. Also some other 2020 and 2018 models. I think it works well with all Sony Xperia USB-C phones.

My Samsung A1 didn't seem to pick the camera up, though I just tried once because my wife's Huawei y9 2019 did work. However, even though we got it to activate and update, the phone didn't seem to want to show the camera view.
We used a usb-a to usb-c adapter.

So I assume you mean that your wife's Huawei works perfectly, but your Samsung only has a partial support?

Please do note that some models might require an additional adapter (such as Micro-USB to USB-C or USB-A to USB-C) to work. If you find a model that works but needs an adapter, please do mention the adapter type too.

Apologies for misunderstanding and thank you for correcting me. I'll change the list accordingly.

Just didn't know at first which list it was meant for, as you only mentioned the phone model. But I'll change it to correct now.

If I had a similar problem, I'd try if updating the Do-it-all handle would fix the issue, as the components have separate firmware updates. But that doesn't of course help if it occurred after updating the handle. If that is the case, I'd probably contact customer service.

Aaand just to make things even more confusing: A user known as manmikey has reported that while he didn't manage to activate the camera using a phone model marked as compatible on the official DJI list (Huawei P30 Pro), he did manage to do that using a phone not mentioned on that list (Google Pixel XL). Read more about his post here: https://forum.dji.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=230828

Sure hope it's just a faulty unit on his side and not a case of DJI's engineers not knowing even themselves what does work and what doesn't...

To see the official list of working phones, see https://www.dji.com/fi/downloads/djiapp/dji-mimo(Though according to manmikey's post, even this looks like it should be taken with a grain of salt!)

The Galaxy J7 Crown does NOT work; and this whole thing is pi$$ing me off. I'm about ready to just send it back for a refund and get a GoPro instead.

I never saw anywhere prior to purchase you had to have a specific phone to activate the camera (or any phone to activate it). Wasn't until I couldn't get it to work that I started googling activation issues and found the problem. It then took me two weeks to find a friend that both had the right type of phone and the time to let me activate the camera.

But now that it's activated my phone won't even connect wirelessly. I've tried two different versions of the APP and get the following error both times:

First of all, thank you for sharing your experience. It will help others to avoid the same pitfall. Also, it is important to express the dissatisfaction for them. Thing's won't get fixed if we just keep quiet.

I feel your pain. I am extremely frustrated about this very same issue, though I have a different phone. Before buying, I thought that being able to run DJI Mimo on my phone would be enough to ensure compatibility with my phone. But NO! Never did they state anywhere that you need a VERY SPECIFIC version of the app to be able to use the whole darn thing.

I am very displeased about this issue. Almost feel like I should ask them to send a compatible phone for me! And, reading the forums more, even with the right phone, right Android version, right USB-C connector, right Mimo version - you still might not get it to work.

So get testing DJI, I feel frustrated that I have to do the work for you (with my list). AND MAKE CLEAR ON YOUR STORE PAGE THAT YOU NEED THESE SPECIFICS JUST TO USE THE CAMERA!!!

If they won't listen, then we'll have to vote with our wallets. Luckily, there are alternatives on the market.

Thanks for all the work you have put into this mess HGDC84. I realy was looking forward to makimg some nice videos with the pocket 2. Sad to say I have returned mine. After going to every store in town, looking for the cheapest on the list of working smartphones (around 100.00,) to find none in stock. I could get them refurbished for around 75.00, and wait another week or so, then maybe be able to use my new purchase, already had to returned the Samsung A10E. I will have my new gp9 with the 540.00 refund, before any refurbish smartphone could get to me. If I had the latest smartphone, why would I by a Pocket 2. I would just buy a gimbel. Thanks again, sorry to rant. Hope DJI reads this, doubt I will use this company again or recomend. Will give you props and mention your work on my pocket 2 review.

After going to every store in town, looking for the cheapest on the list of working smartphones (around 100.00,) to find none in stock. First of all, thank you for your kind words and encouragement. I'd like to state though that this is not only my doing - I just was the guy who thought out this kind of list could be handy. The guys who really do the job and should be thanked for are the ones who have given the time and effort to test their phones with the camera and report their results here - guys like you :-) If no one else had taken part here, my list would still consist of only four phones. So it's all of us together for this one :-)

And no need to apologize me for your valid complaints. Many of us have gone through the same, frustrating process. For many, the same struggle is still going on. Don't think anybody has been exactly happy for finding out they need to get a new phone as well. I think the ones who should apologize are the DJI guys for not making these requirements clear enough.

I'd like to see your review after you have released it. Where and when will it be published? :-)

I just bought the P2 and I have the Samsung S7 Edge. I had to order a Micro USB adapter from Amazon. I finally got the P2 to connect to my cellphone and activated it and downloaded the updates, but whenever I try out the camera connection the video on the camera is non responsive. I only see half a frame and it won't follow the gimble when I move the P2. Therefore I'm saying the Samsung S7 Edge does not work with the P2.
I'm going to revise my statement above. I did get it to work wirelessly, the picture is great in both the video and still pic mode. So as far as working with an adapter, its a no. but working wirelessly, it a yes.
