I am also in the LA area (Glendora). I can fly around my neighborhood, although if I go very far east I run into the Brackett airport Class D airspace. As you have noticed, there are a bunch of airports around the basin, so that does restrict it some. Believe it or not, my first day flying was about a mile south of LAX at two different parks in El Segundo. Turns out that there is an odd notch to the south of LAX that made it legal. Took a friend and I a good hour to confirm that that little chuck of airspace was not actively in their class D. I can give more details on that if desired.
Other than that, I have flown at a couple of radio sites - one in Montebello and one in Whittier and one in the San Gabriel mountains north of San Dimas. I took a camping trip in October into the way back county of the desert eat of Red Mountain, and did a bunch of flying there. That was nice because there was zero WiFi interference!
Where are you in the LA basin?
Thanks for reaching out! I live in Studio City about 5 minutes from Universal Studios. I've made a quick outing to a park and a outing to a spot in Burbank to take some photos of an aircraft on static display, but since then I've been very hesitant to go out again, because it just seems too easy to make a very expensive (rule breaking) mistake. It seems to me that rules are being drafted to basically make it impossible to fly, and it's really frustrating.
There's an RC field in Van Nuys that has a drone area, but it is what is called an FAA 0 Altitude area and apparently I need written authorization from someone at the Van Nuys airport to submit to DJI just to fly at this field.
When you mention "radio sites" do you mean RC flying fields?
Thanks Again,
