I personally would not stretch the footage. It looks very weird.
Just make it full HD as I did without stretching.

PS, that mirror thing in the black sides is done by youtube when you upload a short film via the youtube app.

Yeah, I think so. Too bad. I like it better with that on landscape views (like desktop screens)

I think that works better indeed!
The stretching works weird on objects my brain recognizes (people, cars, trains, etc.).
And without the black bar it looks even better.
I noticed your thumbnail also got mirrored black bars now.

yes i will try no stretch on more upcoming shorts from now.  the only con so far is that more image content get crop and loss..  the mirrored black bars you can avoid when you upload your own thumbnail image Peter!

I actually like the mirrored bars on the sides.
Wish they had made them in the widescreen view too (not just in the thumbnail, but in the video too)

When our main newspaper site here in NL shows portrait video's, it adds a blurred version of the video on the full width of the frame (it even moves) and I sort of hoped youtube would do the same.

The problem is that the #shorts format from youtube is mainly made for phones and tablets.  where the mirrored image content will not shown..

I know, they do this (the newspaper website) only when you have your phone / tablet etc. in landscape mode.
